While spending on innovation has indeed suffered in this recession, it is not the entire story. Companies do recognize that there is a return on investment to be enjoyed with innovation; they just need to figure out what works best for them. They are looking to go for those programs that might have a shorter term payoff, confirming that these companies recognize that innovation is a weapon to combat the challenges of these times and not a burden.
